Project Management
I've recently (past 3 years) entered into the field of project management. the company I work for, uses a mentor system, and I have supplemented this with courses and other reading material. I have found, that micromanaging a project is by far the worst way to get things accomplished in an efficient way and with less time. My immediate supervisor does just such. He inundates me with minor questions and asks for information that does not contribute to my projects execution success. This in turn consumes my time and makes me less productive. Stress is also added and incubates the problem. In order for a project to be executed with some measure of success, whether in low cost, less time, higher quality or just a smooth transition, one must learn to delegate, not only the work, but the authority and power to execute the tasks as seen fit. Select people for your team that have the correct skills and knowledge to suit the projects requirements. Allow them the ability to expand themselves and take calculated risks. Ensure that they are planning their tasks and documenting as required. Have regular meetings, and other communications on a constant basis to suit the projects intensity. In other words, don't have meeting for the sake of having them. They need to be useful and productive. Depend on your team to have the answers when asked, and if they don't step up and provide the assistance that is needed. Well I could stay on my soap box longer...but I will save more for later. |
